THE FORTY CLUB SEASON
n anyone’s language, season 2020 was unusual. Social distancing, hand sanitis- ing, ball sanitising, no teas! All that being said, however, it was a successful one for
We had four centuries and three centurions in 2020, Brendon Hillyard (2) Faf Fourie (1) and Jim Keys [EC] (1). Well done to our century makers.
The top wicket taker in season 2020 was Chris Stride [YNE]. Chris made his debut in 2019 and last season managed to play for four di erent districts as he took 36 wickets in 17 games.
The best bowling gures came from Yasin Moham- med of Eastern Counties who took 6 for 36 against Frinton on Sea. Eight other players took 5 wickets or more: well done to all of them!
Top ‘keeper in 2020 was former Crystal Palace, Leeds and England football international Nigel Martyn [YNE]. Nigel took 4 catches and completed a stumping in his 5 games with the Forty Club. Yorkshire & North East District Chairman Kevin Owens was our most successful elder with 4 catches, whilst also being responsible for 2 run outs.
The best batting performance of the season came at Barton Turf in an Eastern Counties match. A huge 293-6 declared with a century from Jim Keys, set up a great game. Our opponents Ashmanhaugh and Barton Wanderers CC managed to bat out 55 overs scoring 220-9 and securing the draw.
The best performance in the eld came in the Barry Williams Trophy match with Helensburgh. The Scotland District managed to defend 119-7
and bowl out Helensburgh for 71. Kevin Ferrie’s 3-11 and Dinesh Bailwal’s 2-9 led the way to a great win.
Well done to two of our Northern Districts, Scotland and Yorkshire and North East who both managed to arrange and play 15 games in this shortened season. Scotland played 15 and won 12, lost 3 while Yorkshire and North East played 15 and won 7, lost 7 and had one no result.
Well that’s the season in a nutshell. 56 games played, 27 won, 24 lost, 2 drawn, 2 no result and
1 tied. Statistically with a 43% win percentage this was our best ever season, equalling a record that has stood since 1961!
Many thanks to all those that have taken part and supported the club in this very di cult year. Hopefully season 2021 will be di erent.

the Forty Club. We were able to start playing on Thursday 16th July when the Yorkshire North
East District visited Crigglestone and when the last match was completed by the Eastern Counties at Chippenham on Tuesday 29th September, we had played 56 with 27 wins, 4 draws, 24 losses and a tie. Of the 57 games, 20 were new xtures which we hope will become regular games going forward. A great achievement and well done to all - from both sides - who played, organised, umpired and scored.
In fact, 270 players played in at least one match, many of these players were representing the Forty Club for the rst time. 237 players batted at least once scoring 8,412 runs with 4 centuries and 34 fties scored.
In the eld 164 players bowled at least two balls, in all 12,154 balls were bowled and 437 wickets taken with 8 ve wicket hauls. Also, in the eld 189 catches were taken along with 22 stumpings. There were also 14 run outs completed. 136 players took at least one catch.
The race to be top run scorer for season 2020 went down to the wire. In the end Brendon Hillyard [SC] pipped Kevin Owens [YNE] by 4 runs. Brendon ended the season with 341 runs while Kevin nished on 337.
The season’s top score came from Francois Fourie, known as Faf. He came to Scotland for 2020 as a support teacher at Lomond School in Helensburgh. Faf signed up for the Forty Club in February
hoping to play a full season. Unfortunately, Covid and school duties restricted him to 4 games. In his rst though he scored an excellent century, it was his rst ton and our highest score of the season.
Faf scored 116* o 66 balls with 7 fours and 10 sixes. He went back to South Africa in December. We wish him well and hope to see him playing again for us in the future.
There were 8 century partnerships in 2020, the best was between Brendon Hillyard and Michael Louw, who put on 173 for Scotland District’s second wicket against Doune CC on the 5th September.
