Buddhists believe that the greatest power is to be self-controlled within the mind. To
be able to focus the mind where you want it, when you want it. To be completely
detached from external ups and downs. To be able to navigate anything that seems
tough or challenging with the same excitement and effort of being equipoised,
balanced. Being able to navigate every situation by gaining clarity and perspective
when you need it by being detached.
When we talk about detachment, that doesn’t mean not caring, not having anything.
Detachment is not that you own nothing, it is that nothing owns you. It means being
close to everything but not allowing it to consume you. That is real power and real
strength.
What I came to realise is that I needed to become close with my emotions, to listen to
them, nurture them and hold space for them but not be consumed by them.
