Overview
Purpose
The Orbis Learner Community (OLC) is designed to provide a learner-centric community that supports
learners in the development of their knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary to achieve their fullest
potential as educated citizens of the world and who are
enrolled in an academic program of studies in which the
curriculum is delivered in an online or virtual format.
There are many unique learner circumstances in which an
Orbis Learner Community will benefit individual learners in
lieu of a traditional school experience. The OLC is an
innovative college-preparatory model designed to meet the
needs of middle and high-school learners who do not thrive in
a traditional school format, those who need a more flexible schedule to accomplish other life goals such
as intensive specialized training or travel, or in environments where the limited number of learners does
not support a high quality traditional school model.
The Learner Community
Components of the Learner Community will include:
• A learning space that is research-based and
intentionally designed as a learning environment
that will contribute to learner collaboration and
development of community. Factors such as
lighting, furniture, and space will be addressed
in the development of this optimal learning
space.
• Technological tools, networks, and resources to
ensure leaners will have exceptional access to
their digital learning needs. The OLC will maintain
optimal bandwidth and network for accessing the
internet via both high-speed Wi-Fi and Ethernet
connection, high quality video conference space,
and a technological configuration designed to
support a high level of learner collaboration.
