WISDOM AND SOUND ADVICE FROM THE TORAH
Generosity and Avoiding Parsimony
One man gives free ly, yet gains even more; an oth er with -
holds un du ly, but comes to pov er ty. A gen er ous man will
pros per; he who re fresh es oth ers will him self be re fresh ed.
(Proverbs, 11:24-25)
The wick ed bor row and do not re pay, but the right eous give
gen er ous ly. (Psalms, 37:21)
... Do not be hard heart ed or tight fist ed to ward your poor
broth er. Rather be open hand ed... (Deuteronomy, 15:7-8)
A greedy man stirs up dis sen sion, but he who trusts in the
Lord will pros per. (Proverbs, 28:25)
They are al ways gen er ous and lend free ly; their chil dren will
be bless ed. (Psalms, 37:26)
Good will come to him who is gen er ous and lends free ly,
who con ducts his af fairs with jus tice. Surely he will nev er be
shak en... (Psalms, 112:5-6)
Whoever loves mon ey nev er has mon ey enough; who ev er
loves wealth is nev er sat is fied with his in come. This too is
mean ing less. As goods in crease, so do those who con sume
them. And what ben e fit are they to the own er ex cept to feast
his eyes on them? The sleep of a la bor er is sweet, wheth er he
eats lit tle or much, but the abun dance of a rich man per mits
him no sleep. (Ecclesiastes, 5:10-12)
