He who op press es the poor to in crease his wealth and he
who gives gifts to the rich—both come to pov er ty. (Proverbs,
22:16)
... O wick ed house, your ill-got ten treas ures and the short
ephah, which is ac cursed? Shall I ac quit a man with dis hon est
scales, with a bag of false weights? Her rich men are vi o lent;
her peo ple are liars... (Micah, 6:10-12)
If a man de noun ces his friends for re ward, the eyes of his chil -
dren will fail. (Job, 17:5)
Extortion turns a wise man in to a fool, and a bribe cor rupts
the heart. (Ecclesiastes, 7:7)
A kind man ben e fits him self, but a cru el man brings troub le
on him self. The wick ed man earns de cep tive wa ges, but he
who sows right eous ness reaps a sure re ward. (Proverbs,
11:17)
He does not op press any one, but re turns what he took in
pledge for a loan. He does not com mit rob bery but gives his
food to the hun gry and pro vides cloth ing for the na ked. He
does not lend at usu ry or take any increase. He with holds his
hand from do ing wrong and judg es fair ly be tween man and
man. (Ezekiel, 18:7-8)
Woe to him who builds his realm by un just gain...
(Habakkuk, 2:9)
