Pour ½ pint of boiling water over 6 oz of chopped dates and one
teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda.
Let it stand while the following is mixed:-
Ingredients:
½ lb sugar
1 tsp vanilla essence
“I never see any home
10 oz sifted self raising flour cooking.
1 egg - beaten All I get is fancy stuff.”
1 teaspoon baking powder The Duke of Edinburgh
2 oz melted butter
½ teaspoon salt
Method:
à add all the above ingredients to the date mixture and mix
well.
à bake for 35 minutes in a moderate oven, (160 c) in a lined
9” x 12” tin.
Topping
5 tablespoons brown sugar - 2 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons cream
à Mix together and boil for 3 minutes. Cool for a short time and
spread on cake. Sprinkle with grated walnuts
NB. This is the Queen Mother’s favourite cake recipe. At her
request, it must not be given but sold for 5p and the money
donated to a Charity
