“But I think you now know enough. You can self-evaluate to determine where you currently
fit and where you would like to be.”
“I fully understand. Thanks Ron, I will.” Dan said apologetically.
“The key point you should know,” said Ron pointing to the sheet, “It is sexy to be 1A and
be labelled LEADER, but the employees in most other boxes are equally valuable, and often
preferred. They are more loyal, are not retention risk and form backbone of the company.”
“What is the top left 1C box Dan? Any idea?”
“Excellent potential but contribution below expectations. I think they are square peg in a
round hole, i.e. they are probably in a wrong role and should be reassigned.”
“Well said Dan. Do you know what our Appraisal system does to such people?”
Dan thought for a while, “As earlier discussed, we keep identifying and focusing on their
weaknesses to justify their poor contribution. And make them 2C or 2B.”
“Unfortunately, true in most cases. Instead of reassigning them to a role that will fit and
hone their skills and strengths, we continue to smoothen the ‘square peg’ to fit in the ‘round
hole’. This not only wastes the talent and potential of the individual but also interferes in their
career development.”
“If we do it right, people in all boxes other than the bottom left red 3C, can move Eastward
through coaching, and focused assignment planning for improved fit and better utilization of
individual skills and strengths.”
