“Potential of an individual is the synergistic effect of all three – Mindful Attitude, Bold
Leadership and Social Intelligence.”
“An individual’s true performance is a combination of this Potential and Contribution.”
“What do you think Dan? Has the ambiguity and subjectiveness reduced now?”
“It certainly has, Ron. Ambiguity is gone. Subjectivity has come down significantly but
cannot be eliminated as you said earlier. This is a good framework for performance evaluation.
The only question for me is how do we measure and track this subjective Potential?”
“Great question as usual Dan. We will need to convert the key elements of Potential skills
into desired behaviors. For example, key behaviors under Visionary skill, for me, are:
VISIONARY
• Recognize the opportunities presented by consumer & customer needs.
• Create challenging vision and consequent objectives, goals, strategies, and plans that would leverage
these opportunities and exceed consumer & customer expectations to create unsurmountable
competitive advantage.
• Engage, enroll, and energize others in pursuit of these vision, objectives, and strategies.
• Focus only on the work and ask only for the work that adds value to the aligned objective, goals, and
strategies.
We will then conduct a 360-degree assessment involving the individual (self-assessment),
his/her boss, peers, and direct reports. All of them will rate the individual on observed
frequency of these desired behaviors under each skill. This Behavior Observation System will
assign a numeric value to the ratings and an overall score will be tabulated for the individual.
The scores for all 3 Potential skills will be cumulated to create the final ‘Potential Score’.”
