Minutes of VAAD meeting, August 17, 2022, 20 Av 5782 5pm
Attendees: Rabbi Goldin (by Zoom), Sam Kapustin, Kal Feinberg, Marilyn Mack, Jack Martell, Dovid Wadler, Marty
Weisberg, Sabine Himmelfarb
Dvar Torah by Dovid Wadler: Bircat Hamazon reminds us that G‐d is in charge, a history lesson of how we are connected
to G‐d, Birkat Hamazon is an antidote to Hubris.
1. Minutes of last meeting were accepted.
2. Kiddush will be at the Martell home this week.
3. Rosh Hashana/Yom Kippur – We will have access to a larger space, the Ulam, at BF. Need to determine how to
arrange chairs and security. Decision was made to continue a lease at BF until after Pesach. There was a
question about moving the daily minyan to BF during the winter months; this discussion was tabled. We will
confirm with BF the details of use of main floor Ulam for Yamim Noraim. We will also have the HVAC system
checked and cleaned if necessary. It was agreed not to have assigned seats for RH/YK.
4. While some people see BF as not ideal because of the distance from Derech Hevron/Albeck, there are presently
no other options.
5. Membership is currently 36 men and 40 women. There was discussion about whether we are losing people or
whether people are away in the summer and will return. We will have more information as people sign up for
RH/YK.
6. Question whether we will require masks on RH/YK. Decided to wait until we know what Covid situation is at that
time.
7. Proposed budget provided by Marty and Jack: Projected Expenses: Rent 1000 NIS/month (?), Insurance on Sifrei
Torah (a recent loan from the Milch family, THANK YOU!) 2000 NIS per year for both scrolls, Yamim Noraim
additional expenses (e.g.) Shomer hired for 2000 NIS. Decisions about spending funds to enhance appearance
(painting etc.) of Beit Frankforter will be tabled for now.
Projected Revenue: Membership Dues 1000 NIS per couple, or 500 NIS per person Seats for guests 100 NIS per
individual or 250NIS maximum for guest family.
8. Membership form will be approved. Jack will manage membership list. Discussion about donations for
misheberach, etc. Vaad agreed that members can be informed that they can make donations, but no selling
aliyot etc. Per Israeli law, an Amuta may not issue receipts for tax deductions on donations in its first two years.
9. KST now has a website: www.kstshul.org, thanks to Jerry Isenberg. It will be managed by Jerry Frankel. We will
need to determine how to protect it from hackers. The Kiddush protocol will be displayed on website, in
addition to davening times and announcements.
10. R. Goldin has created a plan for tzedakah.
11. Dovid Wadler and R. Winkler are working on a calendar which will be printed and posted on the website.
12. The plot of land for which we applied has been awarded to the Elad (Ir David) organization for the purpose of
building a community center. In consultation with our contact at the Iriyah, it became clear that submitting a
counter proposal would not be feasible. He suggested, however, that the City would wish to advocate for us
with Elad so that there is a permanent place for our minyan in the future Elad Center. The City is concerned that
there is no functioning synagogue building in Tzafon Talpiot.
