of the technique, which provides a single score. However, they
acknowledge that this approach is user-friendly and requires less
time. Nevertheless, while evaluating written work, the holistic scale
allows raters to peruse each written composition efficiently and
then make judgments based on a rating scale or assessment rubric
that delineates the criteria for assessment. Accordingly, Hyland
(2003) measurement reliability enhancement can be achieved by
including multiple raters for each publication.
In contrast, analytical scoring is an alternative approach for
assigning scores to students' written compositions. According to
Hyland (2003, p.229), analytical scoring is a method used to
evaluate writing by having readers analyze a text based on a
predetermined set of criteria considered essential for effective
writing. Additionally, according to Fox and Cheng (2017),
analytical scoring makes it easier for raters to pinpoint particular
performance characteristics divided into categories on the rating
scale.
Hyland (2003) demonstrates that analytic scoring assists
students in identifying their learning progression and implementing
targeted improvements. It also enables teachers to provide feedback
and scaffolding to support students' efforts to continue learning how
to write a decent text. Despite its merits, the method is criticized for
its ability to influence the ratings of others. Analytical scoring is
