                         ùThe best style for presenting facts and instructions is that known to technical
                    authors as functional English. Its mood, person, and tense may be varied to suit
                    particular documents but it remains essentially the presentation of exact reasoning
                    with mathematical precision. In this respect, it may be contrasted with popular
                    story writing where the reader is confronted with a series of events which may
                    or may not be directly concerned with the plot. His curiosity is stimulated by these
                    and he looks for a solution of his own. For recreation this is excellent-for study
                    it is diastrous. The technical reader should be given no choice and opportunity to
                    invent ùfactsû or data to solve his problem. In functional English he is told
                    precisely what to do. If, for example, he is required to take a guage reading at
                    a certain time he is told to ùread the pressure guage immediately the jack has
                    reached the end of its stroke,û and not ùthe pressure should be noted after the
                    movement of the jack,û which is not a mandatory instruction and allows some
                    latitude in the actual time at which the reading is to be taken.
