Unit 5
How come such signs and symptoms occur?
Director Choi: Doctor, we’re just curious how come such signs and symptoms occur during
pregnancy.
Mrs. Choi: Could you explain the internal reason in a simple way?
O.P.D. Doctor On Duty: As what we’ve talked about a while ago, hormones such as Progester-
one and Estrogen in female and Testosterone in male are a few of the reasons why a baby was
developed inside your womb.
Mrs. Choi: You were talking about the 2 female hormones. Is there any difference between these
2, doctor?
O.P.D. Doctor On Duty: Yes, absolutely there is! Progesterone is the hormone of mothers while
Estrogen is the hormone for women.
Mrs. Choi: Amazing!
O.P.D. Doctor On Duty: This explains that, Progesterone is responsible for all the signs and
symptoms during the whole pregnancy stage.
Mrs. Choi: What makes the presence of Progesterone in my blood create the sudden change of
my well-being during pregnancy and lactation?
O.P.D. Doctor On Duty: It’s the increase in the level or amount of Progesterone in your blood
that creates all these signs and symptoms in pregnancy such as vertigo, nausea, vomiting,
elevated body temperature and bodily changes.
Director Choi: I think I get the point now, doctor. If Estrogen is high, which occurs during
menstrual period, the Progesterone is low and vise versa.
O.P.D. Doctor On Duty: You’re definitely, correct!
Mrs. Choi: What does the brain have to do with these hormones? You told us a while ago that the
healthy status of the brain contributed to my pregnancy.
O.P.D. Doctor On Duty: The brain carries the Pituitary Gland that is responsible for secreting
and producing the hormones.
Mrs. Choi: Marvelous!
O.P.D. Doctor On Duty: Thus, instructing them to prepare the reproductive organs for the
fertilization and implantation of the sperm and egg cell in the uterus.
