Suggestion for helping a patient void
 Elevate the head of the bed if it is not contraindicated
 Turn on water tap for the sound of running water
 Force fluids if not contraindicated
 Place patient’s hands in warm water
 Pour warm water over external genitals

4.8 Care of the hair (shampooing)
Daily care of the hair
Purpose
To keep hair in a clean and health condition
To improve the appearance of the patients

Equipment
1. Brush & comb
2. Towel

Procedure
1. Place the patient in a comfortable position
2. Place towel on top of the pillow under the patient's head and shoulders
3. If the hair is badly tangled comb a small part at a time oil or Vaseline may be applied to
untangle the hair.
4. If the hair is long, it should be braided and fastened with a rubber band.
5. Remove the towel and leave the patient comfortable
6. Remove hair from comb & brush, wash and dry.

Shampooing of hair in bed
Purpose
To keep the patient’s hair and scalp clean and healthy
To stimulate circulation to the scalp
To treat the condition of the hair & scalp
To make the patient comfortable
To improve the appearance of the patient
Equipment
1. Comb and brush
2. Large pitcher of warm water
3. Small pitcher for pouring water
4. Large basin or pail
5. Bath towels
