CHAPTER 3
DEFENSE
In the previous chapter, we examined the use of footwork to
improve your connecting rate through specific movement
and body mechanics. The proficient use of footwork is also
conducive to building an effective defense. In this chapter,
we will take a closer look at several defense methods used
to minimize the impact of or avoid a punch altogether. The
defensive techniques we will examine in this chapter
include:
Slipping punches
Catch and throw
Parrying
Level changing
Retreat and circling
Retreat and counter
Pivoting
Slipping Punches
You can evade a barrage of punches with the effective use
of slipping. There are several directions in which you can
slip, and this often will depend on the angle from which a
punch is thrown. For example, you might have a jab or cross
thrown in a straight trajectory. To slip a straight punch you
must take your head off the center line of attack by bending
laterally around the waist. Typically, you would look to slip
to the outside of a punch.
