shoulder forward and backward only slightly changes the
distance between your head position and the center line of
attack. Incorporating lateral bending around the waist helps
create sufficient distance between your head position and
the center line of attack.
We will cover more forms of slipping later in the chapter.
Catch and Throw
There are four ways to catch an incoming punch.
1. From your boxing stance, start by lifting your right
shoulder to your ear, keeping your elbow tucked in. Make
sure that your right hand stays pressed against the lateral
aspect of your head. In this position, your arm serves as a
protective shield and absorbs the impact of the punch. The
same arm that catches the punch also throws the
counterpunch; this could be a straight punch (jab or cross)
or a right hook.
