Level changing is movement that occurs when you adjust
your height by changing the inner angle of your knee joint.

This ascending and descending movement inhibits attacks
because it is quite challenging to connect punches to a
                target in perpetual motion.

                Retreat

Retreat and Circling: To retreat, push off your lead foot to
step backward and away from an incoming punch. When

you have successfully cleared the punch using the initial
retreat step, make sure that your feet are parallel to each
other, which will allow you to shuffle your feet as you
continue to circle around the ring or space in either a
clockwise or a counterclockwise direction. (See page 28 for

circling.) Develop good defense habits by keeping your chin
                protected as you move around.

Retreat and Counter: When you retreat (step back), you
must push off your lead foot and step backward to avoid an

incoming punch. You are now in a safer position to throw a
                counterpunch. Practice some counterpunching
                combinations:

Retreat and counter with a cross

Retreat and counter with a cross/lead hook

Retreat and counter with a jab/cross

Retreat and counter with a jab/cross/lead hook

Retreat and counter with a rear uppercut

Retreat and counter with a rear uppercut/lead hook

                Pivoting

You can avoid a flurry or barrage of punches by moving

away from the line of attack. Pivoting is one method of
