Level changing is movement that occurs when you adjust
your height by changing the inner angle of your knee joint.
This ascending and descending movement inhibits attacks
because it is quite challenging to connect punches to a
target in perpetual motion.
Retreat
Retreat and Circling: To retreat, push off your lead foot to
step backward and away from an incoming punch. When
you have successfully cleared the punch using the initial
retreat step, make sure that your feet are parallel to each
other, which will allow you to shuffle your feet as you
continue to circle around the ring or space in either a
clockwise or a counterclockwise direction. (See page 28 for
circling.) Develop good defense habits by keeping your chin
protected as you move around.
Retreat and Counter: When you retreat (step back), you
must push off your lead foot and step backward to avoid an
incoming punch. You are now in a safer position to throw a
counterpunch. Practice some counterpunching
combinations:
Retreat and counter with a cross
Retreat and counter with a cross/lead hook
Retreat and counter with a jab/cross
Retreat and counter with a jab/cross/lead hook
Retreat and counter with a rear uppercut
Retreat and counter with a rear uppercut/lead hook
Pivoting
