Let’s use the example of two boxers with the same orthodox
stance, i.e. the same left-foot lead. One boxer throws a jab

while the other slips to the right (outside) of the punch.
Because the boxer slips to the outside of the straight punch,
he or she can counterpunch or escape without
                counterpunching.

In another possible scenario, the boxer slips to the left
(inside) of the jab. In this scenario, the defensive boxer does
not completely shift his or her head away from the line of
attack, as the head is still within striking distance of a cross
coming from the other boxer’s rear hand. In this situation,

the boxer has to follow up with an attack, typically a left
hook to the body or head after slipping on the inside of the
jab, in order to avoid a potential counterattack (cross)

coming from the other boxer’s rear hand.

These are a couple of tips to keep in mind when slipping:

Take your hands with you: When you slip from one side
to another, your hands should be level with and protecting

your chin. Try not to drop your hands and expose your chin
when you slip from side to side.
