Figure 5.11 (a,b) Rhinitis can be seen on radiographs, particularly on a well‐positioned open‐mouth ventrodorsal projection. Soft
tissue foci (* and white arrow) within the nasal cavity and the absence of nasal turbinate destruction are more common with rhinitis, as
is the presence of bilateral foci. With chronic disease, however, nasal turbinate destruction can occur. (c) Maintenance of the fine nasal
turbinate architecture (arrows) is best seen with CT images in a bone window. Postcontrast images ((d) transverse and (e) dorsal plane
reconstruction) in a soft tissue window aid in identifying thickened nasal mucosa and pockets of entrapped fluid (arrows). (f,g)
Transverse T2W and (h,i) postcontrast transverse and dorsal MR images: the mucosa of nasal turbinates is better resolved than the
bone on MRI. Nonuniform signal intensity of the nasal mucosa or thickening is present. Areas of entrapped fluid are distinguishable
from the mucosa on the T2 images, since the fluid is more hyperintense than mucosa (arrows). Similar to CT, the inflamed mucosa
(arrows) will contrast enhance and is seen more diffusely unilaterally in this patient ventrally on the left. Source: Images courtesy of
