Page 27 - TITBITS FOR JOBSEEKERS
P. 27
The first thing you should know is that many people apply for the same job as you do,
and employers are looking for the best. They pay attention to the smallest details of your
application, and simple things like punctuation, grammatical and spelling errors can do
a lot of damage to your application. Submitting the right document also matter. For
example, if you upload a testimonial where a certificate is required, you will not be
considered, if you sent your application as a body of an email where you are expected to
send it as an attachment or upload it in a recruitment portal, you have missed out. If the
advertisement says you should write your Resume in a certain font, font size and storage
format etc., do not do otherwise. It may have consequences, or as well disqualify your
application. Read the instruction very well and follow it.
We will talk about these documents one by one later, but your resume is number one. It
must be beautifully written, readily available, easily accessible, and very compelling. An
employer should look at your resume once, and straightaway, see the things he is looking
for. Your covering letter is important too. It is the 'intro' to who you are. If anyone says
can I meet you? Your covering letter should answer it satisfactorily. It must be brief,
punchy, and hot! Having read your covering letter, an employer should feel he knows
enough to hire you. Since you are not an anyhow person, why should you make an
anyhow job application? If your covering letter and resume do not impress you, it will
not impress anyone either. That means you do not stand a chance for an interview.
Excellent presentation includes other supporting documents like your certificates,
testimonials, and proofs of identity. Present clear photocopies of these documents where
hard copies are acceptable. Use the right format and size for soft copy submissions. Do
not do anything that will discredit your application and jeopardize your chances. You
have waited long enough to come this far; you should not squander the opportunity.
Reflection
“A good application is a spot-on for the Hiring manager. Weak and
poorly written ones put him off”
