The advantages of reviewing and tailoring your resume to suit the job roles cannot be
over emphasized. For example, most recruitment websites or organizations use modern
Application Tracking System (ATS) to select the right candidates out of several thousand
applicants. In these organizations, ATS parses all resumes through a programmed
algorithm looking for specific words or phrases that match the one used in defining the
job roles. If your resume does not match such words, it will be automatically filtered off,
denying you the chance of ever coming on the table of the Hiring manager. Many
applicants have been weeded off like that. The working principles of ATS and its
application in recruitment services underscore the need for resume review for every job.
There is a way to say you qualify for the job in a manner that will satisfy the ATS.
In writing a good Resume, there are rules or conventions to follow. It is advisable you use
strong action verbs to denote your experiences and achievements in your previous jobs.
Do not just say what you did but tell us how well you did it. Use performance-based verbs
to state your achievements. For example, do not say “I carried out laboratory tests,”
instead, say “I run laboratory tests with less than 0.01 marginal error in the result.” That
way, you are saying that your tests results are 99.9% dependable. Do not say “I made
good sales as the sales executive,” instead, say “Monthly Sales rose by 15% under my
watch.” Be more definitive in stating your achievements.
Review or revise your resume all the time. Stick to the instructions in the job
advertisement. Use the right format: font, font size, paper margin, document type (pdf or
.docx). Save it in a safe device. If you do not trust your device storage disk, use cloud
storage service providers like Dropbox or Google drive, you can easily access your
documents anytime you need it. Do not ever submit a resume for a job without first
reviewing it.
