THIS year we went to the newly completed Olympic swimming pool at Lang
lands Park to hold our inter-house swimming carnival. As this was our
first competition in fresh water every swim constituted a school record. The
spacious area around the pool allowed the whole of the High School and
some Parents to watch the proceedings in comparative comfort. Prior to
the carnival, some of the competitors, in charge of Mr. Williams and Mr.
Christensen, attended training at the pool and showed marked improvement.
Oxley House won the competition by 25 points. The individual cham
pions were :—
Girls—Open: Pam Clark (Mitchell House).
Under 16: Heather Sands (Cunningham House).
Under 15: Janice Coulter (Cunningham House).
Boys—Open: John Thallon (Kennedy House).
Under 16: Peter Martin (Mitchell House).
Under 15: Jim Thallon (Oxley House).
The main reason Oxley House won the competition is that it gained
some 60 more points than the other Houses in the qualifying races. This
proves that the House with the greatest number of qualifiers has the best
chance of winning.
The inter-school competition held at the Valley Baths was won by
Banyo State High School with 165 points. As we gained only three points, it is
obvious that we need much training in fresh water to compete successfully.

players only Malcolm Bunney was with us to carry on the traditions of
the “A” team. But here we had a sound nucleus, and the team that
represented us, did so with grace and credit.
As in previous years our keenest games were with Salisbury, eventual
winners of the South Zone competition. This year has also seen the rise
of other stars in the competition and with the rapid growth of Camp Hill
and Balmoral, the interest in sterner competition will give added zest to the
game and if Wynnum are to hold a top place in the competition, we shall
have to work hard.
Much of the success of this year’s game goes to the flue playing of
Malcolm Bunney and Bay Hallman both in singles and doubles. John Roulston.
Raymond Hargreaves. Peter Driver and Peter Martin also played "A"
grade.
We look forward to 1960 with some hope as several of these players
will still be with us and the experience of this year will give them greater
confidence for future contests.
In the “B” grade, the mixture of successes and failures was all the
more interesting, as many of the sets were close, hard fought contests, and the
