                                                                                      Since   only    management     can
                                                                                      actually   sanction   presenteeism,
                                                                                      it  bears   a  heavy   responsibility.
                                                                                      To   avoid    presenteeism    and
                                                                                      rather   than   measure    absen-
                                                                                      teeism,   the   human-resource
                                                                                      (HR)   manager   sliould   measure
                                                                                      a  much   more   important    indica-
                                                                                      for:  the  level   of   staff   engage-
                                                                                      ment,   wlffch   is  a  real   factor   of


                                                                                      Employee     hirnover,     absen-
                                                                                      teeism    and   presenteeism    are
                                                                                      only   the  symptoms   of   lack   of
                                                                                      engagement     and   motivation.
                                                                                      Even   if  tliey   are   interestiiig
                                                                                      indicators,    it  would   be  much
                                                                                      more   relevant   to   address    the
                                                                                      cause:   the  level   of  engagement.
