Tambi´ en estos metales son “filos´ oficos” y no vulgares, como mues-
tra este pasaje del Catecismo y otros pasajes de sus libros.

Q. When the Philosophers speak of gold and silver, from which
they extract their matter, are we to suppose that they refer to
the vulgar gold and silver?
A. By no means; vulgar silver and gold are dead, while those

Los metales “filos´ oficos” est´ an identificados con los siete astros m´ o-
viles, los cuales, a su vez, tampoco son los astros visibles sino los “fi-
los´ oficos”. La correspondencia es la siguiente: Sol ↔ Oro, Luna ↔ Pla-
ta, Mercurio ↔ Mercurio, Venus ↔ Cobre, Marte ↔ Hierro, J´ upiter ↔
Esta˜ no y Saturno ↔ Plomo. Estos metales se pueden transmutar entre
s´ ı, pero hay reglas precisas.

then is succeeded by Jupiter, next by Mars, the Sun, Venus,
Mercury, and, lastly, by the Moon. [ ...] experience teaches
us that Mars can be easily converted into Venus, not Venus

¿se supone que se refieren al oro y la plata vulgares? Respuesta. Para nada. El oro y la
plata vulgares est´ an muertos, mientras que los de los fil´ osofos est´ an llenos de vida.
