                                                    Spiritual Care


                            Protocol for Roman Catholic Priest Requests


                   Policy


                   To provide 24/7 Roman Catholic rituals to patients and families who request it at
                   all University Health Network sites.

                   The Department of Spiritual Care in partnership with the Roman Catholic
                   Archdiocese of Toronto share the responsibility in ensuring patient and family
                   requests are fulfilled in a timely manner. This policy will outline the responsibility
                   of the Spiritual Care Department and the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of
                   Toronto, in the provision of the Roman Catholic ritual.


                   Procedure

                       1.  Requests for a Priest are made either through the on-call Spiritual Care
                          pager or directly to the Roman Catholic Archdiocese from the patient care
                          unit.
                              a.  The Spiritual Care Professional on-call hours are between 08:30
                                 and 23:00 hours. During these hours any request for Roman
                                 Catholic priests should be made through the on-call Spiritual Care
                                 pager. Between 23:00 and 08:30 hours, requests will be made
                                 directly from the patient care unit.

                       2.  The Spiritual Care Professional or Resident responds to all requests
                          providing necessary Spiritual Care and determines the following
                          information:

                              a.  Request is initiated by the patient or family
                              b.  Verify patient is Roman Catholic
                              c.  Name and location of patient
                              d.  Verify reason for request: Sacrament of the Sick, communion,
                                 confession
                              e.  Is the patient in danger of immediate death?
                              f.  Is the patient conscious?
