THE SPIRITUAL CANTICLE
Songs between the soul and the bridegroom (fragment)
Bride
Our bed is in flower,
bound round with linking dens of lions,
hung with purple,
al adobado vino Following your footprints
built up in peace,
and crowned with a thousand shields of gold.
maidens run along the way;
the touch of a spark,
the spiced wine,
scents from the balsam divine.
In the inner wine cellar
I drank of my Beloved, and, when I left
through all this valley
I no longer knew anything,
and lost the herd that I was following

"The fact that there are scarcely any verbs reveals stillness, peacefulness, quietness, the same
sensations as one feels after drinking spiced wine (adobado vino). In the wine cellar time pauses
and placid space appears (de paz edificado). Senses disappear, plunged into drunkenness, and
only love is left".
