Nomination Recognition 2017
Report by Individual Nominee
CATEGORY: COACH OF THE YEAR
NOMINEE NOMINATOR DEPARTMENT
Tammi Jackson Marlon Tillman Packaging 200917
Describe the situation or event related to the individual's or team's performance.
The Packaging department didn't have enough PLs. So a concerted effort was made to bring new PLs on
board on a temp-to-hire basis. But the department lacked the standardized training needed for the new PLs
when they started. Previously new PLs were placed with a veteran PL and told "learn how to be a PL". In late
2016, Tammi went to the Packaging Manager Donna Wolcott and asked if she take the lead on putting
together a training program for the new PLs. Tammi pulled together resources from the Supply Chain and
began her 6-8 week training for the new PLs in 1st quarter of 2017. Training them on all aspects of the Supply
chain and introducing them to the PL role in a gradual yet standardized way. The training included hands-on
working on the production lines. Tammi believes that the leader of the line needs to know what his/her team
members face on a day-to-day basis. The trainees had sessions with several different departments: Safety,
Environmental, etc. These sessions along with a intense focus on SOP/WIS allowed the trainees to learn the
GOJO language before being placed on the floor learning from a veteran PL.
We on 3rd shift benefited greatly from the training program. We currently have 4 PLs who are now full time
GOJO employees in the PL role. We even have 1 who went through the program, was hired in as a PL, but has
now been promoted to Manufacturing Associate Supervisor, all in 11 months.
Describe in detail the individual's or team's notable behaviors.
Two things that distinguish Tammi's efforts would be:
1. Her willingness to take the initiative to create, and lead the training program. Nothing existed up until she
developed the program. Tammi saw a need and instead of complaining about it, she went to the person who
could empower her to do something about it.
2. Tammi's passion for the new PLs is evident by the fact she still works closely with them and makes sure the
training is ongoing. Since she started the program Tammi has gone from a PL herself to 3rd shift production
supervisor. But this promotion hasn't stopped Tammi. It has allowed Tammi to continue her desire to help out
all of the new PLs in Packaging. Case in point. Just last week, Tammi worked with a new 2nd shift PL at the
end of 2nd shift on getting his process order closed out. This was done even as she had to get her on shift and
team members in place. She just wouldn't allow this new PL struggle without taking the time to help.
What were the results of the individual’s or team’s behaviors?
Successful onboarding training program for new PLs
