BLENDING THE OLD WITH NEW
BLENDING NEW AND EXISTING
ARCHITECTURE
Complimenting Existing and Elevating the
Architectural Palette of Downtown
With a new wave of development in Downtown Dover, it was important for
the new architecture to be reflective of its surroundings and neighboring
architecture, but not detract attention away from the historic buildings
themselves. The existing architectural language of Dover operates at a
material level within a well-defined palette of brick, lap siding, painted
wood accents and shingles, and hierarchically stratified organization
and well-defined separation of program visible from on the facade.
The new architecture proposed within this masterplan document operates
under the same parameters, with programmatic separation easily legible
from the exterior, and material palette that compliments the existing
architectural environment. A material palette of brick, wood accents and
metal paneling, the new architectural palette provides a contemporary
interpretation of the historic palette by introducing new colors, scales
and proportions.
