Insensato, hopo concciving from despalr. Que se apoyan en su desesperanza
In Heavenly Spirits could such perverseness dwell? ¿Pueden ser tan perversos los espíritus?
But to convince the proud what signs avail. No hay signos que convenzan al soberbio
Or wonders move th' obdurate to relent? 790 Ni milagros que al duro lo conmuevan:
They. hardened more by what might most reclaim. Se endurecen aun más por su reclamo.
Grieving to see his glory. at the sight La gloria de Él les duele y al mirarla
took envy. and aspiring to his height. Le envidian codiciando aquel honor
Stood re-embattled fiercc. by forcé or fraud Y vuelven a luchar: por fraude o fuerza
Weening to prosper. and at lenght prevail Imaginan medrar y al fin vencer
Againsti God and Messiah. or to fall A Dios y a su Mesías o caer
In universal ruin last: and now En total hecatombe. Pero ahora
To final battle drew. disdaining flight. Final batalla buscan sin huidas
Or faint retrcat: when the great Son of God Ni desmayos. El gran H ijo de Dios
To all his host on eithcr hand thus spake:- 800 A sus huestes inmensas dice asi:
'“Stand still in brighl array. ye Saints: herc stand. “En formación brillante quedareis:
Ye angels armed: this day from battle rest. Vosotros hoy no vais a batallar.
Faithful hath been your warfare. and of God Luchando fuisteis fieles y Dios Santo
Accepted. fcarless in his righteous cause: Os acoge. Sin miedo en justa causa
And. as ye have received. so have ye done. Conforme a lo que os dieron os portasteis
Invinciblv: but of this cursed crew Sin ser vencidos. La maldita tropa
The punishment to othcr hand belongs: Será por otra mano castigada
Vengeance is his. or whose he solé appoints. Pues El debe vengarse o quien El diga.
Number to this day’s work is not ordained. No hay números que hoy deban guerrerar
Ñor multitude: stand only and behold 810 Ni masas: solamente hay que mirar
God’s indignation on these godless poured La ira derramada en los impíos
By me: not vou. but me. they have despised. Por Mi. pues me desprecian -no a vosotros-
Yet envicd: against me is all their ragc. Y envidian: contra Mi es toda su rabia
Because the Father. t' whom in Heaven suprcme Pues Dios a quien del Cielo los supremos
Kingdom and power and glory appertains. Poder y reino y gloria pertenecen
Hath honoured me. according to his will. A mi me honró conforme a su querer.
Therefore to me their doom he hath assigned. Por ello me concede su castigo:
That they may have their wish. to try with me Que cumplan sus deseos y que prueben
In battle which the stronger proves. thev all. A ver quien es más fuerte: o todos ellos
Or I alone against them: since by strength 820 O. en contra, sólo yo. ya que la fuerza
They measure all. of other excellence Es su norma y los bienes de otra clase
Not emulous. ñor care who them excels: Ni buscan ni se ocupan quien los tenga
Ñor other strife with them do I vouchsafe." No quiero otra batalla contra ellos."
'So spake the Son. and into terror changed Dice el Hijo, cambiando con espanto
His count'nanee. too severe to be beheld. Su rostro, severísimo de ver.
And full of wrath bent on his enemies. Y en plena furia va a sus adversarios.
