b. Check the starting torque of the input shaft.
• If it is not within the specified range of the starting
torque, adjust the adjusting stub at the end of the pitman
shaft.
7. Testing the clearance between the sector gear of the
pitman shaft and the ball nut rack
a. Keep the steering gear pitman arm in the position for
driving the vehicle straight forward (middle position).
b. Sway the pitman arm to see if the readout of the
diagauge is within the specified clearance limits.
8. Removing the pitman arm of the steering gear
a. Make assembly marks on the steering gear pitman arm
and the steering gear pitman shaft.
b. Remove the fixing nut for the steering gear pitman arm.
c. Using the hammer to tap the inner side of the pitman
arm gently. Remove the pitman arm from the pitman shaft.
Caution
Tap the pitman arm up and down evenly. Do not
strike heavily or the pitman arm may be damaged.
