From fear of the Divine Presence. ,íÖò−Ì×ÐMÔíêÖþBnÌô 1 Rashi derives this from the indications that this verse continues the narration of the circumcision of Avraham and
his household: 1) The pronoun î−ñê—to him is used without mentioning Avraham. 2) We are not told the purpose of
God’s appearing to him. It, therefore, becomes obvious that after Avraham was circumcised, God appeared to him
to inquire of his health. (M., G.A.) 2 Sotah 14a. 3 When the pain is greatest. 4 Bava Metzia 86b. 5 On other
380 God subjected Avraham to ten tests. 381 A person has no control over his sinning with his eyes and ears because occasions when God appeared, the location is not mentioned. See above 12, 1; 13, 14; 15, 1. (R.M.) 6 Ber. Rab. 42,
he may inadvertently see or hear that which is prohibited. (Ran, Nedarim 32b) 382 As a result of being circumcised 8. 7 ëѾB− means he had been sitting previously. ëÔLÖ− means he sat down at that moment. 8 Ber. Rab. 48, 7. See also
Avraham was in total moral control of all his actions. That is the meaning of ó−ô³ í−íî—you will be perfect. 383 V. 8. Shavuos 30b. 9 Tehillim 82, 1. 10 Being ill, why was he sitting at the entrance of the tent? (M.) 11 Bava Metzia
