 34 1. Deenah went out, ·íÖò−Ìðê¥Ñ®ÑzÔî.ê ãì  the Canaanites and the Perizzites. −¢ÌfÌþÐtÔëe −£ÌòμÞÔòÐkÔa
 the daughter of Leah, í flÖêÑñ-³Ôa  [Since] I am few in number, þ flÖtнÌô−¤Ñ³Ðô ¶−ÌòÎêÞÔî
 whom she had borne to Yaakov, ë¢ÒšÎ¼ÞÔ−Ðñí£ÖðÐñÞÖ−þ'ÓLÎê  they will gather together and attack me. −Ìòe flkÌíÐî·−ÔñÖ¼e¥õнÓêÞÓòÐî

 by Shechem, son of Chamor, the Chivite, −£ÌeÌìÞÔíþB§ôÎì-öÓaó«Ó×ÐL  “Should he make our sister into a harlot?” ô :eòÞѳBìÎê-³Óêí£ÓNμÞÔ−í–ÖòBïÐ×ÞÔí

 ë−³× þ¼òí´ ë−³× þ¼òí´  and to everyone that was with him, B¢n̼þ¤ÓLÎê-ñÖkñ£ÓêÐî

 AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA RASHI  é"ùøAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA  “Get rid of the foreign gods in your midst. ó flÓ×Ð× ÞÒ³Ðaþ¤ÓLÎê·þÖ×ÑpÔí−¥ÑíGÍê-³Óêeþ‚̽Öí
            Purify yourselves and change your garments. :óÞÓ×−ѳ ÞGÐôÌN eõ−£ÌñÎìÞÔíÐîe flþÎíÞÔhÌíÐî
 i.e., “God is my miracle.”  .−ÌqÌò êeí ’í
 Our Sages interpret it  ,eíeLÖþÐð eò−ѳBaÔþÐî
                  AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA RASHI  é"ùøAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
 that it was God who called Yaakov—ñÑê. 112  ;ñÑêëҚμÔ−ÐñBêÖþКí"ÖaÖwÔíÓL
 The words of the Torah  íÖþB³ −ÑþÐëÌðÐî  Few in number.  .øÈtÀñÄîéÅúÀî
 are as a hammer that splinters stone  ¼ÔñÖ½±Ñ®BõÐ−L−ÌhÔõÐk  [Meaning] few people.  :ó−ּ̬eô ó−ÌLÖòÎê
 [in that] they can be divided into many interpretations.  ,ó−ÌôּЬíÖnÔ×Ðñó−ÌšÐlÔìгÌô  [31] A harlot. 129  .äÈðBæÀëÇä [àì]
 But, I intend only to give the plain explanation of Scripture.  :−̳êÖaêÖþКÌôñÓL B¬eLÐtëÑMÔ−Ðñ−ÌòÎêÔî  [Meaning] abandoned.  :þÑšÐõÓí
 [1] The daughter of Leah.  .äÈàÅìúÇa [à]  Our sister.  .eðÅúBçÂà-úÆà
 [Why is she] not [called] “the daughter of Yaakov”?  .ëҚμÔ−³ÔëêGÐî  Onkelos translates it “Our sister.” 130  :êÖòÖ³ÖìÎê³Ö−
 But, because of her “going out”  dÖ³Öê−Ì®Ð−óÑLñÔ¼êÖlÓê  131
                               [1] Arise, go up.  .äÅìÂò íe÷ [à]
 she is called “the daughter of Leah”  ,íÖêÑñ³Ôa³êÑþКÌò  132
                 Because you lingered on your journey,  CÓþÓcÔaÖzÐþÔìÑêÓL−ÌtÐñ
 because she [Leah] too, was in the habit of “going out,”  ,íÖ³Ð−Öí³−ÌòÖêЮÒ−ê−Ìí¹ÔêÓL
                             you have been punished  Ö zÐLÔòͼÓò
 as it is said, “And Leah went out to meet him.” 113  :B³êÖþКÌñíÖêÑñêÑ®ÑzÔî:þÔôÍêÓpÓL
          and this [trouble] of your daughter has come to you.  :EÓzÌaÌô³êÒïEÐñêÖëe
 (She is the source of the adage: “Like mother like daughter.”)  :(dÖzÌëÐkdÖnÌêÐk:ñÖLÖnÔíeñÐLÖôÖí−ÓñÖ¼Ðî)
                                 [2] The foreign.  .øÈëÅpÇä [á]
 [2] He was with her.  .äÈúÉàáÇkÀLÄiÇå [á]
             Which you possess from the spoils of Shechem.  :óÓ×ÐLñÓLñÖñÖMÌnóÓ×ÐðÓiÐaLÑiÓL
 In the usual manner.  :dÖkÐþÔðÐk
                                Purify yourselves.  .eøÂäÇhÄäÀå
 And mistreated her.  .ÈäÆpÇòÀéÇå
                                 From idol worship.  :íÖþÖïíÖðBëμÑô
 In an unusual manner.  :dÖkÐþÔðÐ×êHÓL
 [3] To the girl’s heart.  .äÈøÂòÇpÇäáÅììÇò [â]  129  This cannot be taken literally because, obviously, Deenah did not act as a harlot for she was taken by force. (G.A.)
 [Meaning:] seductive words,  :ëÑlÔíñÔ¼ó−ÌëÐM−Ô−гÌnÔíó−ÌþÖëÐc  130  And not as might be thought: “with our sister” which would mean, “shall one do with our sister as one does
      with a harlot?” The correct translation is: “Shall one make of our sister as one who is abandoned?” (S.C.)  131  óeš
 112 As if it had been written thus ñš ëš¼−ñ ñêþ¾− −šñê êþš−î—“The God of Yisroel called Yaakov ñÑê. Since God reveals  implies that Yaakov needed prodding. (S.C.)  132  And, as a result, you have delayed fulfilling the oath made above
 Himself upon this world only due to Yaakov, therefore, Yaakov can be called ñÑê. (S.C.)  113  Above 30, 16.  28, 20–22.
