there you shall bury me.” −Ìò¢ÑþÐaКÌzíÖn£ÖL 3. They completed forty days [of embalmment] for him, óBfl−ó−¤Ì¼ÖaÐþÔê ·Bñ-eêÐñÐôÌiÔî.è
Now therefore, please, I would go up ê§Öp-íÓñͼÞÓêí †ÖzÔ¼Ðî for that is the number of days required for embalming. ó−¢Ì¬ŠòÎìÞÔí−¤ÑôÐ−e£êÐñÐôÌ−ö'Ñk−§Ìk

just as he made you swear.” :EÞÓ¼−ÌaÐLÌíþ'ÓLÎêÞÔk “If I have found favor in your eyes, ó flÓ×−Ñò−¤Ñ¼Ða·öÑì−̳ê¥Ö®Öôê¶Öò-óÌê
7. Yoseif went up to bury his father; î−¢ÌëÖê-³Óêþ¤ÒaКÌñ¹£Ñ½B− ñÔ¼'ÔiÔî.ï please speak in Pharaoh’s ears, saying. :þ ÞÒôêÑñí£Ò¼ÐþÔõ−'ÑòÐïÖêÐaê–Öò-eþÐaÔc
and with him went up all Pharaoh’s servants, ·íÒ¼ÐþÔõ−¥ÑðÐëÔ¼-ñÖkB‚zÌêe ¶ñμÞÔiÔî 5. ‘My father made me swear [an oath] saying, þ †ÒôêÑñ−Ìò¤Ô¼−ÌaÐLÌí−„ÌëÖê.í
the elders of this house, B fl³−Ñë−¤ÑòКÌï “Behold I am dying. ›³Ñô ‡−Ì×ÒòÞÖêí¤ÑpÌí
and all the elders of the land of Egypt, :óÌ−ÞÖþЮÌô-±ÓþÞÓê−'ÑòКÌïñ£Ò×Ðî In my grave that I have prepared for myself ·−Ìñ−̳−¥ÌþÖkþ ¶ÓLÎ ê−†ÌþÐëÌšÐa
8. And all Yoseif’s household, ¹ flѽB− ³−¤Ña·ñÒ×Ðî.ì

did they leave behind in the land of Goshen. :öÓLÞ b±Óþ'ÓêÐae£ëÐïÞÖ¼ [Embalming] involves using aromatic spices. :êeí ó−ÌôÖNÐa³ÔìÔšÐþÌôöÔ−Ðò̼
9. With him also went up chariots and horsemen. ó−¢ÌLÖþÞÖt-óÔbëÓ×£Óþ-óÔbB fln̼ñÔ¼¤ÔiÔî.¬ [3] They completed—for him. .Bì eàÀìÀîÄiÇå [â]
They completed the days of his embalming B³Ö¬−ÌòÎì−ÑôÐ− Bñ eô−ÌñÐLÌí

The Egyptians wept for him, seventy days. .íBé íéÄòÀáÄLíÄéÇøÀöÄîBúÉà ekÀáÄiÇå
For Yaakov had taken all the silver and gold ëÖíÖïÐî¹Ó½ÓkñÖkëҚμÔ−ñÔ¬ÖpÓL Forty days of the embalming period íÖ¬−ÌòÎìÔñó−̼ÖaÐþÔê
that he had brought from Lavan’s house öÖëÖñ³−ÑaÌôê−ÌëÑíÓL and thirty [additional days] for mourning. ,íÖiÌ×ÐëÌñó−ÌLGÐLe
and made a piled heap of it −ÌþÐ× B³Bê íÖNÖ¼Ðî [They mourned him] because a blessing had come to them íÖ×ÖþÐaóÓíÖñíÖêÖaÓL−ÌõÐñ
and said to Eisov: :îÖNѼÐñþÔôÖêÐî on account of him. ,BñÐèÔþÐñ
“Take this for your share of the Cave.” :íÖþÖ¼ÐnÔëEКÐñÓìñ−ÌëÐLÌaíÓï ñB¬ I.e., The famine ended ëÖ¼ÖþÖííÖñÖkÓL
[6] Just as he made you swear. 216 .EÆòéÄaÀLÄäøÆLÂàÇk [å] and the waters of the Nile became plentiful. :ö−Ì×ÐþÖaгÌô ½eñ−Ìò−Ñôe−ÖíÐî
“But, had it not been for the oath íÖ¼eëÐMÔíñ−ÌëÐLÌëêGóÌêÐî [5] That I have acquired. .éÄìéÄúéÄøÈkøÆLÂà [ä]
I would not allow you [to do this.]” ,EÎì−ÌpÔô−̳−Ì−ÖíêG According to its simple meaning ,B¬eLÐõÌk
But, he was afraid to say: “Break your oath,” !íÖ¼eëÐMÔíñÔ¼ þBëμ:þÔôBñ êÑþÖ−ñÖëÎê it is the same as: “If a man shall [íÓþÐ×Ì−] dig.” 214 .L−ÌêíÓþÐ×Ì−−Ìk :BôÐk
so that he [Yoseif] might not respond: :þÔôêÒ−êHÓL There is a Midrashic explanation ðB¼ BLÖþÐðÌôe
“If so, then, I will break the oath íÖ¼eëÐMÔíñÔ¼ þBëͼÓêöÑkóÌê that fits the meaning ,öBLÖlÔíñÔ¼ëÑMÔ−гÌô
that I swore to you not to reveal íÓlÔèÎêêHÓL ,EÐñ−ÌzмÔaÐLÌpÓL as if it had said −̳−ÌòÖšþÓLÎê—that I acquired. .−̳−ÌòÖšþÓLÎêBôÐk
about the Hebrew Language— ,LÓðBwÔí öBLÐññÔ¼ For R. Akiva said: “When I travelled −ÌzÐ×ÔñÖíÓLÐk:êÖë−̚μ−ÌaÔþþÔôÖê
