Figure 32.38 Dorsopalmar radiographs of the metacarpus. There is a smooth palisading periosteal reaction around the metacarpal
bones. This type of periosteal response is characteristic of hypertrophic osteopathy. The exact cause is unknown but it is commonly
associated with thoracic neoplasia. The proliferative response starts distally and extends proximally, affecting the diaphysis of the
long bones, keeping the cortex intact, and sparing the articular margins.
