The Cashier ignores him, reaches for the PA mick, and makes an
announcement. “May I have your attention?” announces over PA system. “The Bus
for Mobile, Montgomery, and Atlanta will be boarding shortly. Thank you.”
Embarrassingly, Alonzo steps aside, and walks through the exterior double
doors. Outside, he places as much as he could into his carry-on luggage; then tosses
away whatever couldn’t fit into a trash bin.
When he returns to the Lobby, an African-American couple walks in. The
couple looks around and takes a seat far left.
After a few minutes, Alonzo approaches the couple, but the man refuses to
help and turns him away. “Sorry for bothering you.”
Later, the double sliding doors opens wide, JOSH, a 28-year-old, Caucasian, fit,
and wearing a pair of washed jeans, blue T-Shirt and a pair of blue sneakers to match,
steps in, and goes straight to the counter.
Much later, Josh walks away from the counter and takes a seat next to Alonzo
-- creating another opportunity for Alonzo to make a plea.
“Sorry to bother you. Just found out from the Cashier that I need five dollars
more to check in my second luggage.” He continues, “you can have my laptop bag for
five dollars.”
“Just five dollars ...” taken aback, “... Is that all you’re asking for it?”
“Yes.”
