CONTRIBUTIONS THROUGH NYAA YOUNG PHOTOGRAPHERS’ NETWORK (YPN)

            • Singapore Young Photographers’
                Convention 2023
            The Singapore Young Photographers’ Convention
2023 was jointly organised by the NYAA Young
Photographers’ Network (YPN) and the Institute
of Technical Education (ITE) in May 2023. Over 500
students from secondary schools, junior colleges,
polytechnics, and universities participated in the
event at ITE College Central. Participants captured
images under the theme “My Hometown Pride,”
aligning with the Photography Festival in Hokkaido,
            Japan.
NYAA YPN mentors reviewed over 1,000 images,
shortlisting 200 for final judging. Professional
photographers from Canon and NYAA selected the top
three winners and awarded merits and honourable
            mentions.

Mr Edward Chia, Member of Parliament for Holland-
Bukit Timah GRC and Deputy Chairman of GPC for
Manpower, presented the prizes. The top winner from
Anglo Chinese School Independent (ACS I) received
a fully sponsored trip to the 8th International High
School Student’s Photo Festival Exchange 2023 in
Higashikawa, Hokkaido, Japan, in August 2023.

            • Trying to do the Unimaginable: Balancing
                Competing Needs in a City
NYAA has been approached by leading camera brands
seeking collaboration, a testament to the impactful
work of the NYAA Young Photographers’ Network and
its visionary members. Mr Darren Soh, an NYAA Gold
Award holder and esteemed photographer, has played
a pivotal role. His award-winning contributions have
centred on heritage, architecture, and landscape,
offering profound insights into the intricate balance
between competing needs within a city.

            Under the theme “Unimaginable: Balancing
Competing Needs in a City,” discussions have
            illuminated Singapore’s ongoing dialogue on
conservation versus development in its dynamic
urban landscape. These dialogues are crucial as they
            challenge conventional thinking, pushing stakeholders
to conceive innovative solutions that bridge disparate
perspectives, often deemed inconceivable by either
            camp.

Mr Soh’s contributions and the broader discussions
facilitated by NYAA provide a platform for deep
reflection and dialogue on heritage preservation and
            urban development. These engagements encourage
            stakeholders to explore unconventional approaches
in harmonising the old and the new, guided by
            thoughtful mediation and governance.
