Front axle-steering linkage
5. Removing right steering trapezium arm
Tip:
Follow the same removal steps for left steering trapezium arm to remove right steering trapezium arm.
6. Checking joints
(a) Check contact area of tie rod left end
assembly and left steering trapezium arm.
• Coat tapered shaft of tie rod left end
contact area covering not
greater than 3/4 length of assembly and inside surface of
whole tapered
mounting hole of left steering
trapezium arm with red lead powder
evenly.
• Insert tapered shaft of tie rod left end
assembly into mounting hole of the
steering trapezium arm, and then take
it out to check contact indentation.
Standard: Uniform contact with
contact area covering not greater than
3/4 length of whole tapered shaft.
In the case of nonuniform contact or contact area
covering greater than 3/4 length of whole
tapered shaft, replace with new tie rod left end
assembly and left steering trapezium arm.
(Reference “Chapter 24 Front Axle-Steering
Linkage, Overhaul”.) 24
(b) Check contact area of tie rod right end
assembly and right steering trapezium arm.
Tip:
Follow the same check steps for tie rod left end
assembly and left steering trapezium arm to
contact area covering check tie rod right end assembly and right
greater than 3/4 length of
whole tapered steering trapezium arm.
Standard: Uniform contact with
contact area covering not greater than
3/4 length of whole tapered shaft.
In the case of nonuniform contact or contact area
covering greater than 3/4 length of whole tapered
shaft, replace with new tie rod left end assembly and
left steering trapezium arm. (Reference “Chapter 24
Front Axle-Steering Linkage, Overhaul”.)
(c) Check contact area of drag link front end
assembly and steering arm.
Tip:
Follow the same check steps for tie rod left end
assembly and left steering trapezium arm to
check drag link front end and steering arm.
Standard: Uniform contact with
contact area covering
greater than 3/4 length of contact area covering not greater than
whole tapered 3/4 length of whole tapered shaft.
In the case of nonuniform contact or contact area
covering greater than 3/4 length of whole
tapered shaft, replace with new drag link front
end assembly and steering arm. (Reference
“Chapter 24 Front Axle-Steering Linkage,
Overhaul” and “Chapter 42 Power
Steering-Steering Gear with Rocker Arm
Assembly, Overhaul”.)
