SWIMMING
Wynnum has had a successful 1968-69 season, and it was encouraging to
see more swimmers participating in the various events. A determined effort by
the competitors resulted in a marked improvement in all branches of the sport.
The swimming team would like to express their thanks to Mr. K. Horwood
for devoting much time and effort as Organiser, assistant Coach, and as a
constant source of inspiration to the team.
In particular, we thank our Coach. Mr. P. Venning, for his strict training
schedule, without which the team would have been ill-prepared to face the stiff
opposition they encountered.
A special thank-you to the members of the team, who at all the carnivals
gave of their best for their school.
It was encouraging to see the support received by the swimmers from the
interested parents, friends and fellow students who turned up to cheer the team
on. A good cheer squad is most important and does wonders to boost the
morale of the competitors.
At the 1969 Annual Meeting of the Queensland Branch of the Royal Life
Saving Society, this school was presented with a pennant for outstanding
performance in the 1968-69 season.
INTER-HOUSE CARNIVAL
(Won by Oxley)
The annual Inter-House Carnival, held at the Manly Baths, was a great
success, with keen competition coming from all houses. Once again Oxley House
was victorious. Second place went to Mitchell, followed by Kennedy and then
Cunningham. The standard of swimming was very high, and this resulted in the
smashing of twenty records by the vastly improved competitors.
A. Smith was the Open Boys’ Champion, taking three records in his
mammoth stride. C. Gillies was the Under 16 Champion, B. Weis Under 15
Champion, and P. Lamond Under 14 Champion.
Denise Scarborough broke four records to win easily the Open Girls’
Championship. Nan Fraser was the Under 16 Champion; Julie Castner and
Margaret Eastley were the Under 15 and Under 14 Champions, respectively.
Q.S.S.S.S.A. CARNIVAL
(A Close Second Place)
At the East Zone Carnival on March 24th, 1969, Wynnum competitors
put up a splendid performance, and from the very beginning it was evident
that the fight for the Champion School would be between Wynnum, Balmoral
and Cavendish Road. Though Wynnum was leading at one stage, when the final
count was made, we were down by a few points to Balmoral.
Congratulations to the individual Champions of their age groups : Andrew
Smith, Denise Scarborough and Brian Weis. Wynnum went on to be represented
in twelve events in the State finals on March 29th and did well, as bronze
medals were won by Brian Weis (Under 16 Backstroke) and by the Open Relay
team (B. Bishop, D. Bromet, E. Roff, A. Smith).
