GIRLS' G.P.S. CARNIVAL (15th March, 1969)
The G.P.S. Swimming Carnival this year was changed from the usual two-
day session at the Valley Pool, with the heats on one day during the week
and the finals on Saturday. Instead, the heats were held at St. Margaret's on
the Saturday morning, with the various schools lunching there and then
continuing on to the Valley Pool by bus for the finals. Wynnum was able to
obtain minor places in the heats, but the competitors had to obtain first place
to be able to swim in lane eight. However, Denise Scarborough and the All-Age
Relay team, consisting of Denise Scarborough, Nan Fraser, Julie Castner and
Ann Aplin, obtained third place. Because of the keen competition and the
enormous size of the other G.P.S. Schools, Wynnum was placed well down the
list, but the enthusiastic spirit of the girls was as high as, if not higher than,
that of the larger schools.
An enjoyable time was spent by the girls' team on a Wednesday afternoon
prior to the G.P.S. Carnival at St. Margaret's, when Wynnum entered into
competition with five other G.P.S. Schools for a friendly swimming off to
celebrate the opening of their new pool.
A special thanks must go to St. Margaret's for their kind hospitality, and
especially to Sister Jean-Marie for the kindness and consideration extended to
us by her.
