People who believe that they can please God by performing such superficial devotional
activities and obtain His blessings, live in a fool's paradise. These sinners who resort to
irreligious behaviour, incur the displeasure of God and receive curses from Him or
providence (Niyati), according to the universal laws of nature. This leads us on to an
important question, "Why do men behave in such an undesirable manner?'' Let us
therefore try to answer this question briefly.
Man's Selfishness
Every person in the world lives in his own particular way. All through his life, he
struggles to make himself and his family prosperous and happy. He makes every possible
effort to achieve these desired goals. In the pursuit of these objectives, he only thinks
about his own interests and does not care for the interests of others. "I don't care what
happens to others, but I must ensure my welfare and well being'', is the attitude behind
all his relentless efforts. It is because of such a selfish attitude that Man creates many
conflicts with others and also creates numerous problems. The basic motivation for such
a struggle is mainly to acquire wealth and power, honour and prestige, dignity and fame,
because Man firmly believes that achieving these objectives will bring peace and
happiness in his life. However, it is the experience everywhere of everybody that Man
does not get real happiness and peace even after achieving these objectives. It is
because of this wrong reasoning that people live their lives in such an erroneous manner.
The main reason for this wrong approach to life is because people do not receive proper
guidance from right persons. On the contrary, right from his childhood, Man knowingly or
unknowingly receives wrong education and training from his family and the society. This
has been happening right from historical times and therefore in human life, history
continues to repeat itself. Man in pursuit of his own happiness gives rise to conflicts with
others and puts everyone including himself in all sorts of troubles and difficulties. In
other words, Man becomes responsible for the miseries of others and entangles himself
and others in chaotic conditions. This is the manner in which he lives his life.
Consequently, the grief and sorrow that Man causes to others, comes back to him like a
boomerang, according to the universal law of 'Action and Reaction.' For example, a
person who murders another person, is either hanged or is murdered by someone. A
sage has rightly stated that "those who live by the strength of the sword eventually
become victims of the sword.'' On the contrary, when a person gives happiness to
others, then happiness is bound to come back to him like a boomerang and this person
