Record Breaking WKF Premier League Event
Canada Wins Two Bronze at Paris Open

Karate Canada’s National Team opened 2017 with
a bang with three top
10 finishes at the recent WKF Karate-1 Paris Open Championship, with two of the finishes being bronze medals.
These results are collectively the best ever for athletes on the National Team Roster at a single European WKF Karate 1 Premiere League event.
“The Paris Open saw a fantastic performance from Canadian athletes at the first Karate One event of 2017,” said Karate Canada President Craig Vokey.
“With two podium and
a top-10 finish and
recent top-10 placings
at the recent World Championships, Canadian athletes are setting their sights on Tokyo 2020.”
The 21st edition of the Paris Open was held Jan. 27 to 29 at the Pierre Coubertin Stadium.
A record breaking 1,217 athletes from 75 countries and 351 clubs competed
in the prestigious event that has long been considered one of the best open karate tournaments in the world.
Karate Canada fielded 16 athletes in both kata and kumite from their National Team Roster.
The number of entries
in some divisions was so large that eight separate pools were required to accommodate all athletes.
For example, men’s kata, men’s -75kg kumite and women’s kata respectively had 155, 140 and 131 athlete entries. This provided plenty
