Abstract
This research is aimed to know whether or not ‚NHT‛ as method is
effective in teaching reading at the second year students of MTs Al-
Muslimun NW Tegal, Batulayar in the academic year 2016/2017. The
design used in this research was experimental design and quasi
experimental design. The population of this research consisted of 30
students, 15 students in control group and 15 students in experimental
group. There is a type of instrument used in this research, it is a test which
consisted of one forms, it was multiple choice test which consisted of 20
items for all experimental and control group. Technique of collecting the
data that used in this research was pre test and post test. The finding of
the research shows the score of t-test is 1.862 and the value of t-table is
1.753 with df =15 degree of freedom in the confidence level of 0.10 or
90%. The figure described above indicates that the value of t-test is higher
than the value of t-table (1.862 > 1.753). This shows that the alternative
hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and as the mean score of experimental group
is higher than the control group, it can be concluded that the using of
NHT is effective in teaching reading especially for second year students of
MTs Al-Muslimun Nw Tegal, Batulayar in the academic year 2016/2017.
From the finding of this research, it is suggested that the teachers should
use NHT method in teaching reading, since as the finding of this research
NHT is effective in teaching English reading.
