Chapter 3 General Repairs
Top Wheel Troubleshooting
7) Test the top wheel down and up sequence while it is running. If the top wheel does not lower
properly, proceed to step 8.
8) Put the top wheel in the lowered position and remove the air line that feeds the top wheel raised
position. Start the top wheel spinning, then manually raise and lower it. If the Top wheel raises
and lowers, proceed to step 9. If the top wheel still does not lower properly, inspect the pivot
bearings for the top wheel and counterweights. If the bearings are rusty, loose or separated
(evidence of separation is mismatched gears), repair or replace them.
9) Reconnect the airline that feeds the top wheel up position. Open the flow control fully. Turn on
the top wheel and lower it. Raising the top wheel should cause it to slam into the stops. Close the
flow control almost fully until the top wheel stops gently.
Note: If the flow control valve is closed too much, the top wheel may not lower.
The following is a list of troubleshooting checks arranged by likeliness to eliminate the problem and
ease of inspection.
Top wheel not up error or fault
1) Verify that the top wheel lowers properly, per The Top Wheel Does Not Lower Properly. Make
any necessary adjustments.
2) Adjust the top wheel proximity switch so that it is on when the top wheel is all the way up and so
that is on when the top wheel is down and inch or two.
As long as there is no error or fault message, it is acceptable if:
The top wheel bounces slightly when it contacts the stops.
The top wheel drags on the top of a large vehicle and comes off of its stops. This may
occur when the top wheel is running from the back of a large vehicle toward the front of
the wash, while the top wheel is in the up position.
