            This is none other than the house of Elohim, ó− flÌíGÍê³−¤Ña-óÌê−Ìkƒí†Óïö−¤Ñê                       and she named him Gad. :ðÞÖbB £ôÐL-³Óêê'ÖþКÌzÔî

                     Yaakov called Yerushalayim, Beis Eil  ,ñÑê³−ÑaóÌ−ÔñÖLeþ−ÌñdÖêÖþКëҚμÔ−         Another explanation as to why it is read  ³êÑþКÌòíÖnÖñ:þÑìÔêþÖëÖc
                     yet this place [that he called Beis Eil]  BïÐî                            as one word ðÖèÖa—[to imply] faithless—traitorous,  ðÖèÖa³ÔìÔêíÖë−Ñz
                         was Luz and not Yerushalayim.  .óÌ−ÔñÖLeþÐ−êGÐîê−Ìí ïeñ                        as if to say, “You were faithless to me  ,−ÌaÖzÐðÔèÖaBôÐk
                       Then from where did they derive  eðÐôÖñöÖ×−ÑíÑôe                                   when you married my handmaid,  ,−̳ÖìÐõÌLñÓêÖ³êÖaÓLÐk
       to say that [i.e., this was the site of the Beis Hamikdosh]?  ?öÑkþÔôBñ                 as a man who is faithless to the wife of his youth.”  :ó−Ìþe¼Ðò³ÓLÑêÐaðÔèÖaÓLL−ÌêÐk

      41  Rashi here sets out to clarify some difficulties in this narrative: 1) Why does Yaakov refer to Yerushalayim as þ¼¾  by bringing wheat and barley,  ,ó−ÌþB¼ÐNe ó−ÌhÌìê−ÌëÖíÐñ
      ó−ô¾í? 2) The Sages state that Yaakov slept that night in Yerushalayim, yet in v. 19 Yaakov names the place Beis  but only ownerless things  ,þÑšÐõÓíÔíþÔëÐcêÖlÓê
      Eil, which was formerly Luz? 3) In v. 12 it states í®þê ë®îô óñî½ íòíî and, behold, there is a ladder standing on the
                                                                                                     that no person minds [their being taken].  :Ba ð−ÌtКÔôóÖðÖêö−ÑêÓL
      ground which would imply that the location of the ladder was in Beer Sheva, where Yaakov had been last (v. 11).
      Yet, later Yaakov calls the place Beis Eil!  42  In Ber. Rab. and in Ramban’s citation of Rashi ¼Ô®ÐôÓêÐî the middle, does not  Jasmine flowers.  .íéÄàÈãeã
      appear. However, Mizrachi asserts that Rashi must mean the middle of the slope. For if Rashi meant that the end  Mandrakes. It is a plant  ,êeí ëÓNѼ ,−ÑñÐè−̽
      of the ladder was above Yerushalayim, then Yaakov having slept in Luz—which is north of Yerushalayim—would
      have found himself outside of the slope of the ladder. There then would be no reason for Yaakov to dub Luz—þ¼¾  which in Arabic is called jasmin.  :ö"−ÌôнÔ−ñêѼÖôÐLÌ− öBLÐñÌëe
