Sally Batton grew up riding her bike to the library and get- ting as many books as she could to take home and read. Now, years later, a young reader just like herself can find Batton’s own books on the shelves. Sally Batton, a Hebron resident originally from Canton, Ohio, wrote the book The Athletic Equestrian: Over 40 Exercises for Good Hands, Power Legs, and Superior Seat Awareness to help all kinds of riders im- prove their horseback skills.
I had the opportunity to chat with Batton about her experience as an equestrian coach and writer as her book finds its place in the world. After teaching at Centenary University, Batton became the head coach of the Dartmouth College Equestrian Team and happily worked in that position for 30 years. Batton told me, “I developed a whole coaching and training system during my time as a teacher.” The eques-
trian coach also started to teach clinics, so she would travel all
around New England as well as head to Alaska and Hawaii to
